The Clockwork Heavens

Rebecca’s current project is rooted in the history of the Baker family of clockmakers in Appleby Parva, Leicestershire, and traces the evolution of early clockmaking. The work considers how time was first learned through light and shadow before becoming standardised. Informed by research into 18th-century astronomical interest in Appleby, the forms explore the inseparable connection between time, clocks and astronomy. Porcelain imprinted with Caroline Herschel’s telescopic sketches; forms inspired by clockmaking tools, designs and inherited apparatus, Rebecca’s pieces link local craft with wider celestial enquiry. In doing so, Rebecca hopes to portray that time, like family knowledge, is continually observed, adjusted, and passed on through generations.
