Working Title: The Clockwork Heavens

Rebecca’s current project is rooted in the history of the Baker family - clock makers living and working in Appleby Parva, Leicestershire between the 17th and 19th centuries - and traces the evolution of early clock making.

‘Enclosed: Tracing a Name Unmade’

This collection began with Rebecca’s fascination with the initials carved into the 18th-century desks of her former primary school, Sir John Moore, in Appleby Magna, on the Leicestershire-Derbyshire border. Curious about one name in particular - J.Wright - she traced the story of a local family whose fortunes declined across generations following the Enclosure Acts, from wealthy yeoman to agricultural labourer. The series reflects on the precariousness of social status and the enduring human urge to leave a mark and be remembered.

‘Field Finds’

This collection grew from restorative walks across my local fields of Charnwood in Leicestershire. With each footstep, I would often find myself wondering about those who had taken the same path in years gone by. My eyes would often be drawn to fragments, revealed for the first time thanks to the changing weather or farming. Incorporating texture and pigment from found materials, these pieces are rooted in place. Placing discovered fragments at the heart of each composition, the pieces tell the tale of history beneath your feet.

‘Beneath the Contours’

‘Beneath the Contours’ was created in response to topographical maps, restorative walks and layers of history beneath our feet. This mixed-media collection incorporates Rebecca’s signature embossed detailing as well as paper-piercing and three-dimensional forms.
